September gardening jobs for the month

Our handy guide to gardening jobs for the month of September. Please note gardening will be very much dependent on the weather in your area with the timings given as a guide only.

Kitchen Garden

  • Sow lettuce, spinach and turnips
  • Net brassicas to prevent bird damage
  • Lift and store onions in a dry place
  • Harvest and store apples, pears, plum and damsons
  • Remove any fruits from greenhouse vegetables and compost remaining plants
  • Dig up and store potatoes, carrots and beetroot
  • Fork over and clear ground of this year's vegetable plot 

Flower Garden

  • Start planting spring flowering bulbs where they are to flower
  • Take cuttings of roses, conifers and evergreens
  • Sow hardy annuals outdoors for flowers next year
  • Pull out and compost faded annuals
  • Sow sweet peas outdoors in a sheltered spot


  • Make new lawns by applying seed or laying turf
  • Reduce the mowing frequency ensuring that the blades are set to at least 2.5cm (1 Inch)
  • Scarify lawn removing moss and thatch
  • Aerate lawn using a hollowtine aerator or a fork
  • Top dress with 6 parts sand, 1 part peat, 3 parts topsoil
  • Last chance to feed and weed your lawn before winter, use JAB Autumn lawn feed and mosskiller
